Saugerties sits where the Esopus Creek empties into the Hudson, and the low ground near the river and along the creek is heavy with clay and silt. Go west and uphill toward the Catskills and it's a different town underground. Yes, where a sewer main is available. The job is a trench from the house to the main, new pipe at the correct slope, and properly abandoning the old septic tank, usually by pumping it, breaking or crushing it and filling it so it can't collapse later. Then the yard gets regraded.

Plan the route before anything is dug. The shortest line to the main isn't always the best one if it runs under a paved driveway, a mature tree or the neighbor's side of a shared yard, and village lots are tight enough that those choices come up often.

It's usually a combination: regrade so the ground slopes away from the house, a curtain drain to catch water moving downhill, and footing drains with a real outlet, whether that's daylight or a dry well.

Don't bury a drain in clay without clean stone and fabric around it. It will silt up in a few years. Driveways on clay have their own version of this.
