Wooded slopes, stone and roots

Most of Woodstock is wooded hillside running up toward Overlook Mountain, with houses and studios tucked back on narrow drives in Bearsville, Zena, Shady and Lake Hill. The ground is full of stone. Old field walls run through the woods, loose boulders sit just under the leaf litter, and flat bluestone ledge is close to the surface on many lots. Every hole seems to find a rock, and big roots come along with it.

Stone walls deserve their own mention. Many are old field boundaries, and some owners want them kept, rebuilt or moved rather than bulldozed. Tell Justin early. A wall can be taken apart carefully with a machine and the stone saved, but not once it's already been pushed into a pile.

Can a mini-excavator work on a tight Woodstock lot?

Usually, yes. Justin's orange Kubota mini-excavator is narrow enough to slip between trees, get down a tight driveway and work beside a house without the damage a full-size machine would do. It can dig footings, trenches and septic work on sites where bigger equipment would mean cutting trees just to get in.

The trade-off is speed: a smaller bucket moves less per pass, so a big dig takes longer. On most Woodstock sites that's a good trade, because the alternative is repairing a lawn, a driveway edge and a few trees. When you do need an opening, clearing should be selective. Take out what has to go, protect the root zones of the trees you want to keep and don't pile fill against their trunks. Justin's land clearing work follows that approach.

Septic systems and wells on Woodstock hillsides

Woodstock has a sewer district around the hamlet center, but most homes outside it run on septic and a private well. On a wooded slope with shallow stone, septic work is fussy: the field needs enough usable soil, it has to stay the right distance from the well, and access for a tank delivery can be a puzzle. Replacing a failed system on an older property often means finding the old tank first, since nobody drew it on a map in 1960.

Wells are the other half. A water line from the well to the house has to be buried below frost and kept clear of the septic system, and on Woodstock ground that trench usually finds rock. Walls, terraces and additions: excavation in Woodstock, NY

Flat ground is scarce here, so people make it. A terrace for a garden, a level spot for a studio, a patio off the back of the house: each one means cutting into a hill and holding it back. A retaining wall on a slope needs a compacted base, drainage stone behind it and a pipe to carry the water out. Skip the drainage and the wall will lean within a few winters. The same goes for the house: water moving down a wooded slope under the leaves hits the uphill wall first, so a swale or curtain drain above the house pays for itself.
